And the other thing I learned from her was how to listen. Leoma was a keen, active listener. She could solve the world’s problems, just by listening. There were many other things I learned from my mother early on and later. But the one thing that just didn’t take was how to cook.

I know that if given the means or the time to have gone for her college degree and teaching certification, she would have thrived even more at that level. But Mom turned the job of teaching assistant into an art form that she mastered at a very high plane, with her pronounced love for children, her patience and passion for working with them, and her gifts for inspiring lifelong learners. On not much more than three thousand dollars a year, she managed to keep it all together. It took her some time to find her footing, without question.

Recently, I had the honor of meeting Lenny Moore, the football star and hero who was one of the first African Americans to play for the Baltimore Colts and who happened to attend an event where I was with Team Phelps amid an array of prominent sports figures. I approached him and introduced myself, saying, “You know, Mr. Moore, I watched you with my father when I was a little girl, and you brought so much happiness to him and so many fond memories to me now. ” I told him we had lost my father much too young, many years ago, and that it had been a difficult time.
