Selected Pages Watch out! InDesign makes a distinction between the page you're looking at, the selected page, and the active (or "targeted") page. It's confusing at first, but you get used to it (or you go mad). The active page is the page that you're working on. When you press Command-A/Ctrl-A with the Selection tool (to Select All), it's the objects on the active page (or spread) that InDesign selects. When you Paste, the object on the clipboard shows up on the active page. The Paste Remembers Layers command is the key to importing layers from another document. Now choose Edit > Paste. You'll see both the objects and their layers are added to your document.

The odd-numbered pages are linked to the first page of the 2-page master spread instead of the second, right-facing page. Yup, and here's how it went south on you (the fix is coming in a minute). Turning off Facing Pages only splits apart existing document spreads, not master page spreads.
