The understanding and determination of properties and processes at a molecular scale, means that nanotechnology could impact on virtually every human-made object, from cars to computer circuits, and from tissue replacements to bridges. Nanostructured ceramics, polymers and metals will have vastly improved mechanical properties. In particular, nanostructured silicates and polymers will act as contaminant scavengers to create a cleaner environment. A number of industrial applications are beginning to emerge that exploit the newly emerging Internet capabilities of embedded systems.

We need a paradigm shift in the new century to search for excellence in the indoor environment. Our aim should be to provide indoor air that is perceived as fresh, pleasant and stimulating, with no negative effects on health, and a thermal environment perceived as comfortable by almost all occupants. In achieving this aim, due consideration must be given to energy efficiency and sustainability. Do we have the necessary information to implement this in practice? Yes, on thermal comfort we do have a comprehensive database, while our knowledge on indoor air quality is still rather incomplete.
