Analytic hierarchy process [Saaty, 1980]. The criteria at the bottom of each branch are the root or evaluation criteria. 2: Decomposition of criteria. Conversely, it is often possible (or even necessary) to do an aggregation of criteria because they reflect (and thus over-emphasize) similar aspects. For example, if ten criteria have been chosen to analyze a decision problem, where one criterion is risk and the other nine refer to cost aspects, costs could be over-emphasized. This can lead to a biased interpretation of the results if the costs are not of overwhelming consideration.

If the evaluations for the different criteria are not aggregated, the goal is to find dominant and efficient alternatives. The set of alternatives which are not dominated by any other alternative is called the Pareto optimal set; its elements are the efficient alternatives. Any solution to a decision problem has a certain stability or sensitivity. Factors affecting the sensitivity of a solution are the evaluation of the alternatives, possible dependencies across the elements, and the presence of near replicas of alternatives.

8 (right) are Pareto optimal, while the alternatives a\ and a2 are dominated by a4 and a3, respectively. For the efficient alternatives, the preferences must be aggregated to an overall preference value for each alternative. If one is interested in only the most preferred alternative (and not in the preference order of all alternatives) then the dominated alternatives can be discarded from further analysis. However, it should be noted that a dominated alternative can be more preferred than a Pareto optimal alternative.
